I brought my kids to the pool at the gym the other day. They are almost 4 and go in with inflatable swimmies. Well one of the decided I was taking too long to get the floats installed so she just jumps in.
She freezes and just stands there at the bottom of the pool. Luckily she was just 1 step from me and had held her breathe. it was the first time she had gone under like that. I think we both had a major code brown. After realizing she could breathe again she got a good laugh out of it, which just gave me another giant WTF?!?!

Reminds me of two waterpark related incidents I had at about that age. Unlike your daughter, I was terrified of drowning.
1. My older brother convinced me to go down a waterslide with him. Under the condition that he wouldn’t let go of me. We go down the slide, a good time for sure, get to the bottom and he immediately dumps me and exits the pool. I sink. He jumps back in for me.
2. Another waterpark but probably same summer. Same brother convinces me to go on a tube ride with the condition that he holds onto the tube I’m in. At some point the path comes to a fork. One side is a relaxing tube ride the other a onslaught of waterfalls, high pressure jets, and terrifying slides(to a four year old). The first waterfall is powerful enough to push my tiny frame, butt first, through the tube center. I managed to hold on to that thing like a life preserver, screaming my lungs off, for the remainder of the ride.
My brother is a jerk.

Thankfully my 4 year is pretty cautious, especially around water, but my 2 year old...man alive. I think i make up for it with being hyper aware of kids and water. My nephew drown at 18 months and my friends 18 month old drowning memorial is this Sunday. Sorry to be a downer

yeah, didn’t mean to bring the down, Just saying I know that code brown moment feeling all too well with kids. The white rim was non-stop code brown potential.

I was a lifeguard for years. One thing that I always hated was those inflatable arm floaties. It’s too easy for them to slip off when a kid jumps in with his hands in the air (like he just don’t care). One pool I worked at banned them after a near-drowning.
With my kids, I made sure that they either had a full life jacket on or I was in the pool with them until they were strong enough to swim without one. I also made sure they had lessons and participated in the swim team.
I had one kid let go of a kick board when I was teaching swim lessons. He sank to the bottom of the deep end. His mom freaked out (rightfully so). I swam over and looked down. He was on the bottom looking up at me. I reached down and pulled him up. I asked him what he did wrong. He replied, “I let go of my kick board?” I told him “Yep. Try not to do that again.” He smiled and went on his way. No big deal.

I jumped off the high dive when I was 3 or 4 because my mom wasn't looking. Scared the crap out of her. I could swim, more or less, but that's a big impact if you don't know how to prepare for it (and I didnt). Fun times.

I never used floaties with my kids because I didn't want them to be too comfortable in water without knowing how to swim. They’re in swim lessons now, and it has definitely taken them a bit longer to get comfortable with the drills, but I’ve never had to worry about them jumping into a pool without me. Shit, that's scary.

I love dadlopnik posts like this. Totally know that feeling. We just started swimming lessons with my 18mo and I’m soooooo overprotective. My biggest phobia is drowning and my wife’s biggest phobia is anything happening to our son, so yeah, my grip was strong. He had no concept of danger yet. I'm much more worried about streets and water than anything else.
